Summer: the classic trip
Long daylight hours, warm coastal weather and everything open. It is also the busiest period, so accommodation and travel fill early — particularly around the New Year holidays.
Autumn: many locals' favourite
Settled skies, cooler mornings, autumn colour in the inland south, and noticeably fewer people on the road. A strong choice for touring and wine regions.
Winter: mountains and quiet roads
The southern alpine areas come alive with ski traffic while much of the rest of the country goes quiet. Alpine routes need more care and more time; a driver who watches conditions is worth a lot in this season.
Spring: green and changeable
Waterfalls run full, the country is at its greenest, and the weather changes fast. Pack layers and keep travel days flexible.
