The map lies, gently
New Zealand's main routes are largely two-lane highways that wind through hills, gorges and coastline. A journey that looks short on a map can take far longer than a motorway trip of the same length at home. Building slack into each travel day is the single best thing a visitor can do.
Jet lag and the first day
Most long-haul arrivals land in the early morning after a very long flight. Driving on the opposite side of the road, in an unfamiliar vehicle, while badly jet-lagged is the classic visitor mistake. Many travellers hire a car later in the trip and use a private driver for that first day.
Weather and seasons
Conditions change quickly, especially in the mountains and on alpine passes. In winter some routes require care and occasionally chains. Local drivers watch conditions daily and adjust departure times rather than pushing on.
