Money, cards and tipping in New Zealand
New Zealand is close to cashless, prices already include tax, and tipping is genuinely optional. Here is what that means day to day.

Cards over cash
Card and phone payments work in cafes, taxis, supermarkets and small-town shops. Carrying a small amount of cash is useful for remote spots and markets, but most visitors barely touch it.
Prices include tax
Goods and services tax is built into the price on the shelf or the menu. What you see is what you pay, with no tax added at the till.
Tipping culture
There is no tipping expectation for drivers, guides, cafes or restaurants. Service staff are paid a wage rather than relying on tips. A tip for exceptional service is welcome, and never assumed.
Paying for your travel
We quote and charge in New Zealand dollars. If you are used to another currency, your card issuer converts at their rate on the day; the amount charged is always the New Zealand dollar figure you agreed to.
