About this day
Tongariro National Park is New Zealand's oldest and a dual World Heritage site: three active volcanoes rising straight out of a tussock plateau, an hour or so south of Taupō.
A private driver is particularly useful here because the best walks are point-to-point — being dropped at one end and collected at the other removes the single biggest logistical headache of the park.
In winter the same day becomes a ski-field run to Whakapapa or Tūroa, with gear space in the vehicle and a driver who watches the road conditions.

Auckland out to Rotorua, or Christchurch through to Queenstown, are two of the most popular one-way days we drive.
