Queenstown without a rental car
Queenstown is compact, seasonal and short on parking, and the roads out of it climb. It is the town where visitors most often tell us the rental car turned out to be a liability.

The honest version
The town centre is small enough to walk end to end, and most accommodation is a few minutes from it. A rental car parked outside your hotel for a week is doing very little except costing money and taking up one of the town's scarcest resources.
The reasons people rent are the day trips — the wine valleys, Arrowtown, the road out to Glenorchy, Wanaka over the Crown Range, Fiordland. Those are exactly the drives that reward a local: the Crown Range is New Zealand's highest sealed road and can hold snow and ice well outside midwinter, the Glenorchy road is beautiful and demands your eyes, and the Fiordland run is a long day in each direction.
Winter sharpens all of it. Ski-field access roads are steep, sometimes gravel, and can require chains fitted correctly — a job most visitors have never done. Our drivers do those roads through the season, with vehicles set up for them.
And on a wine day, or a night out, nobody in your group has to sit it out. That alone is often the deciding factor.
