Winter roads, snow and ice — without driving them yourself
Alpine passes, ski-field access roads and frosty early mornings are the drives visitors are least prepared for — especially if you have never fitted snow chains or driven on ice.

The honest version
New Zealand's mountain roads are open and accessible in winter, but they change fast. The Crown Range, the Lindis, Arthur's Pass and the Desert Road can all carry snow, ice or grit; access roads to the ski fields are steep, sometimes unsealed, and often require chains to be carried and fitted at short notice. Rental agreements frequently restrict which of these roads you may use.
Fitting chains correctly, in the cold, on the roadside, in traffic, is a skill. So is reading a shaded corner at 7am and knowing it holds ice when the rest of the road is dry. Our drivers do both routinely, in vehicles serviced and equipped for the season.
The practical result is that you get an early start without an anxious one. You are collected from your accommodation with your gear, you arrive at the mountain, and at the end of the day someone else drives home while you thaw out.
Outside the ski fields, the same applies to winter sightseeing and intercity legs. A frosty morning run over an alpine pass is a lovely thing to be driven over and a hard thing to drive for the first time.
