Christchurch without a rental car
Christchurch is the South Island's gateway, and most visitors collect a rental here on arrival. If the idea of starting a long South Island drive straight off a flight does not appeal, you do not have to.

The honest version
The rebuilt city centre is flat and compact — the botanic gardens, the museum, the Avon and the new laneways are all walkable, and a rental car in town is mostly a parking decision. Where a vehicle matters is getting out: Banks Peninsula and Akaroa over the hill, the Waipara vineyards north, and the long roads inland toward the mountains.
The Banks Peninsula road is a good example of why a local helps. It is winding, narrow in places and steep, with views that are wasted on whoever is driving. As a private day it becomes a straightforward, enjoyable outing with the vehicle waiting while you are at the harbour.
The bigger decision is the onward leg. A lot of South Island itineraries run Christchurch to Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka or Queenstown. Driven yourself that is a long day of concentration; booked as a private trip it becomes a scenic day with stops, luggage in the boot and no deadline at the other end.
Arriving by ship at Lyttelton works the same way — met at the terminal, out to whatever you want to see, and back before departure.
