Wellington's airport is close to the city — one of the shortest airport-to-centre runs in the country — and famous for a windy approach. Most arrivals are simple; the part worth planning is the ferry connection if you're heading south.

Wellington is known for crosswinds and a short runway between hills and harbour. Landings can feel lively; the pilots do this daily.

The city centre is a short run away. If you're crossing Cook Strait, the ferry terminal is on the other side of town and sailing check-in closes early — build in a buffer.

Getting out of Wellington Airport
Wellington rarely causes visitors trouble on arrival — the distances are short and the terminal is easy. The one thing worth getting right is the connection to the Cook Strait ferry, which many South Island trips depend on.
We time ferry transfers around the sailing's check-in cut-off rather than the departure time, which is the mistake most people make. Your driver takes you to the right terminal with the bags and time to spare.
