Queenstown has one of the world's most photographed approaches — mountains on both sides, lake below. It is also a small, busy airport in a valley where weather matters, so a little planning on the ground side goes a long way.

- 1The approach
The descent through the mountains is dramatic and occasionally bumpy. Poor weather can delay or divert flights, which is normal here rather than alarming.
- 2Arrivals
Queenstown takes both domestic and trans-Tasman international flights. International arrivals clear immigration and biosecurity in the terminal.
- 3Biosecurity
Declare food, plant material and outdoor gear. Ski and hiking equipment is fine to bring — it just needs to be clean and declared.
- 4Out of the terminal
The terminal is small and gets crowded when several flights land together. A pre-booked driver meets you with your name and takes the queue out of the equation.
- 5Onwards
Queenstown accommodation, Wānaka, the ski fields, Milford day trips and Fiordland all start here. In winter, the roads matter more than the map.
Good to know before you land
- Weather diversions happen — keep arrival-day plans loose
- In winter, alpine roads may require chains; a local driver carries and fits them
- The town is compact but the surrounding drives are longer than they look
- Book everything early over the ski season and the summer holidays
- Sun and wind at altitude are stronger than you'd expect — sunscreen year round
- Ski gear travels fine, but tell your transfer company about it in advance
Getting out of Queenstown Airport
Queenstown rewards visitors who plan the ground transport before they fly. It is a small valley with a lot of visitors, roads that narrow quickly outside town, and a winter season where conditions decide the timing of everything.
We meet you at the terminal, load the bags and the gear, and take you straight to your accommodation. From there the same driver can handle the ski runs, the day trips and the transfer out at the end of the trip.
If your flight diverts to another airport — occasionally it happens in bad weather — talk to us. We drive that route regularly and can usually get you to Queenstown the same day.
