About this day
The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy hugs the western shore of Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables opposite and mountains closing in ahead. It is regularly named one of the finest drives in New Zealand.
At the top, Glenorchy is a tiny settlement at the head of the lake, with the red boatshed on the wharf and the Dart and Rees valleys running further into the mountains at Paradise — country familiar from a great many films.
It works beautifully as a half day, and equally well as a drop-off for anyone starting a Routeburn or Dart Valley walk.
