The honest version
The city centre around the Octagon, the railway station and the university is walkable, and Dunedin's hills make parking and hill starts an unnecessary introduction to New Zealand driving.
The Otago Peninsula is the day everyone comes for — albatross, penguins, the harbour road and Larnach Castle. The low road along the water is narrow, winding and tidal-edged, with very little room to pull over, and the wildlife viewing runs to booked times. It is a far better day from the passenger seat.
Beyond the peninsula, the Catlins south and Central Otago inland are both long, rewarding drives that a local can make far more interesting — and both work as one-way legs if you are heading on to Invercargill or Queenstown afterwards.
Port Chalmers cruise arrivals are a specialty: met at the terminal, out to the peninsula or the city, and back well before departure.
