About this day
Lake Tekapo's colour is the thing everybody comes for: glacial flour suspended in the water turning it an improbable turquoise, with the Southern Alps behind and the tiny stone Church of the Good Shepherd on the shore.
The drive out across the Canterbury Plains and up through Burkes Pass into the Mackenzie Basin is a proper piece of South Island scenery in its own right.
Tekapo sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, so if you are happy to travel back late, the stargazing is among the best in the world.
