About this day
Rotorua is the North Island's geothermal heart: steaming parks and mud pools, lakes, the Whakarewarewa forest, and one of the strongest concentrations of Māori cultural experiences in the country. It is a long enough drive from Auckland that many visitors write it off as an overnight — but as a private day trip it works well.
With your own driver you decide how the day is split between attractions, and you are not tied to a return departure time. If you want to stay for an evening cultural performance and travel back later, that is your call.
Rotorua also links neatly with Hobbiton, Tauranga and Taupō. Any of those can be added to the day, or used as the finishing point if you are not returning to Auckland.

Auckland out to Rotorua, or Christchurch through to Queenstown, are two of the most popular one-way days we drive.
