About this day
Kaikōura is where the Seaward Kaikōura Range comes down almost to the water, and where a deep ocean trench close to shore brings sperm whales, dolphins and seals within easy reach of a boat.
The coastal highway up from Christchurch is dramatic all the way, and the seal colonies along it are free, close and often the highlight for children.
Whale watching sails on the tides and the weather, so a private driver — able to shift the departure time or wait out a delay — is the safest way to build a day around it.
