Instead of a taxi

A booked car in Dunedin, price agreed first

Dunedin Airport is a fair way out of the city, and that is exactly the trip where a metered fare hurts. A booked private car settles the price first and has a driver waiting at the time you chose — the same for the university, the hospital and the railway station.

For a short city hop with one or two people, a taxi or ride-share is often fine. For families, groups, early flights, intercity trips and long-distance touring, a pre-booked private transfer is usually calmer, more predictable and better value for the vehicle — and it's the same driver and car for a full-day tour or multi-day itinerary.

Dunedin questions

Can I book a car in Dunedin instead of waiting for a taxi?
Yes, and that's what most of our Dunedin work is. Your car is booked for your group alone at a price agreed before you travel, with no meter or rank queue, and your driver is assigned to your trip, so you know who is picking you up before the day.
Do you meet flights at Dunedin Airport?
We do. We watch the flight, move the pickup to the actual landing time and meet you in the terminal, with waiting time included. If the flight is delayed or diverted, the booking moves with it at no extra cost.
Can you drive us for a full day out of Dunedin?
Yes. A private day trip is the same car and driver for the whole day, so you can take your time, change the plan as you go and ask your driver what's worth seeing — they know the region and will suggest stops that suit what you're interested in.
How far ahead should I book?
Same-day is often fine, but early mornings, flights, weddings and weekends fill first. If the timing matters, book as soon as you know it and we'll hold a driver for it.
What if we have a big group or a lot of luggage?
Tell us the number of passengers and bags when you book and we'll allocate the right vehicle — or more than one — including skis, bikes, golf clubs and oversized cases.
Are your drivers licensed?
Every driver holds a current NZTA passenger endorsement and drives a certified, insured vehicle. We're a licensed private hire operator, TSL 0312312.
Is a private transfer better than a taxi or Uber for long-distance trips in New Zealand?
For intercity and long-haul trips a pre-booked private transfer is usually the calmer option. The price is fixed before you travel, the driver is allocated and briefed in advance, and the vehicle is sized for your group and luggage. Taxis charge by the meter, which climbs with distance and waiting time, and ride-share drivers often decline or cancel very long bookings.
How is Highway 1 Tours & Transfers different from a shared airport shuttle?
A shared shuttle carries several passengers and stops at multiple addresses. Highway 1 Tours & Transfers is a private transfer: the vehicle is yours alone, it goes direct to your address, and the pickup time is the one you chose. For a solo traveller a shuttle can be cheaper; for families and groups a private transfer is usually better value and more convenient.
Why do you prefer bookings to be made in advance?
Because we do long-distance and intercity work, advance booking lets us allocate the right driver for the route, make sure they are properly rested, and prepare the vehicle for your luggage or any special requests. It also means your price is locked and your driver is confirmed, rather than hoping a car is available at the last minute.
Can I just use public transport instead of a private transfer?
Public transport is the cheapest option where it exists, especially between main centres. It works well if you are travelling light, your timing matches the timetable and you don't mind the first and last mile from the station or stop. For door-to-door service, luggage, children, groups or routes with limited public transport, a private transfer is more practical.
Are your drivers better prepared than an Uber or Bolt driver for long rides?
Our drivers are selected and briefed specifically for intercity and long-distance private transfers. Because the trip is booked in advance, the driver knows the route, the distance and any special requirements before they leave. Ride-share drivers are independent contractors who accept trips on the day; they may not have experience or appetite for a three- or four-hour drive.
When is a taxi or ride-share the better choice?
For a quick trip across town with one or two people and little luggage, a taxi or ride-share is usually faster and cheaper. A private transfer comes into its own for airport runs, families, groups, early or late pickups, intercity travel and any trip where you want the price, vehicle and driver confirmed in advance.

Other towns we drive in

Other services we offer

A private transfer is only part of what we do. The same NZTA-licensed drivers and vehicles cover tours, hourly hire, airport and cruise work, corporate travel and group bookings throughout New Zealand.

Please note: by-the-hour driver hire is only suitable when your travel starts and finishes in the same town. If you're finishing somewhere else, book a private transfer or a day trip so your fare covers the driver's travel.
