South Island itinerary: 7 days without hiring a car

One week is enough for the South Island's greatest hits if you keep the route tight. This loop starts and ends in Christchurch, takes in the Mackenzie Country, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wānaka and the West Coast glaciers — and every leg can be done as a booked private transfer, so nobody in your group spends the holiday staring at the road.

Arrive in Christchurch, then head inland into the Mackenzie Country. Tekapo's lake, the Church of the Good Shepherd and the dark-sky reserve are your first taste of how big this island's scenery gets.
Day 2
Lake Tekapo → Queenstown

South past Aoraki/Mount Cook country and over the Lindis Pass into Central Otago. Queenstown is your base for the next three nights.
Day 3
Queenstown → Milford Sound (return)

The big day. It's a long return trip, which is exactly why so many visitors book a driver for it — you watch the scenery, we watch the road, and the day is timed to your cruise departure.
Day 4
Queenstown → Queenstown
A free day in Queenstown: the gondola, a lake cruise, Arrowtown, or a bungy if that's your idea of fun. No driving today.
Day 5
Queenstown → Wānaka

A short hop over the Crown Range — the highest sealed road in the country — to Wānaka's lakefront, walks and famously photogenic lone tree.
Day 6
Wānaka → Franz Josef

Up the Haast Pass and along the West Coast through rainforest to glacier country. One of the most varied single driving days in New Zealand.
Day 7
Franz Josef → Christchurch

Back over the Alps via Arthur's Pass to Christchurch for your flight home — or stay an extra night if you can.

Planning this trip without a car

Book Milford Sound cruises and any must-do activities before you firm up transport — fixed departure times shape the whole day.
In winter (June to August), the Crown Range and Arthur's Pass can require chains or close in storms. A local driver who watches the forecasts is worth a great deal on this route.
If you have an eighth day, spend it in Te Anau and do Milford from there — it shortens the biggest driving day considerably.
