North Island itinerary: 7 days without hiring a car

Most overseas visitors fly into Auckland and then wonder how much of the North Island they can realistically see in a week. Quite a lot, as it turns out — subtropical coast in the north, farmland and film sets in the Waikato, geothermal Rotorua, the great lake at Taupō and the capital at the bottom. Every driving leg below is a route we cover as a private transfer, so nobody in your group has to learn to drive on the left.

Auckland → Bay of Islands (Paihia)

North out of the city into Northland's subtropical coast. Paihia is the base for island cruises, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and some of the warmest swimming water in the country.
Day 2
Bay of Islands → Bay of Islands
A full day on the water or exploring Russell and the Treaty Grounds. No driving today.
Day 3
Bay of Islands (Paihia) → Auckland

Back south to Auckland for the night, with the harbour, the Sky Tower and the waterfront restaurants on your doorstep.
Day 4
Auckland → Hobbiton Movie Set
168 km (104 miles)about 1 hr 58 min
South through the Waikato dairy country to the film set near Matamata. Tours run to fixed times, so this is a day worth booking transport around.
Day 5
Hobbiton Movie Set → Rotorua
70 km (43 miles)about 59 min
A short leg into the geothermal belt. Rotorua is the centre of Māori cultural experiences, hot pools and steaming parks.
Day 6
Rotorua → Taupō
81 km (51 miles)about 1 hr 4 min
An easy run to New Zealand's biggest lake, with volcano views across the water and the option of a scenic flight or a lake cruise.
Day 7
Taupō → Wellington
372 km (231 miles)about 4 hr 41 min
The long final leg down the middle of the island to the capital — Te Papa, the cable car, coffee, and a flight home or the ferry south.

Planning this trip without a car

Hobbiton tours and Bay of Islands cruises sell out in summer — lock those in first and build the driving days around them.
The Taupō to Wellington leg is the longest day of the week. If you have an extra day, break it at Napier for the art-deco streets and the wineries.
Northland is warm and humid from December to March; the far south of this route can be windy and cool in the same week. Pack for both.
