Five days is a common stopover length for visitors breaking a long-haul trip in New Zealand, and it is enough to see the North Island's headline attractions if you stay on one loop. This route runs Auckland to Hobbiton, on to Rotorua and Taupō, then back to Auckland for your flight.

Planning this trip without a car

Book Hobbiton before anything else — tour times dictate when you need to leave Auckland.
If your flight home is in the evening of day five, you can add a thermal park stop on the way north.
Rotorua and Taupō are close enough that you can base in one and day-trip to the other if you would rather unpack once.
