Ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip that covers both islands without living out of a suitcase on wheels. This route runs Auckland down the North Island, crosses Cook Strait by ferry, and finishes with the Mackenzie Country, Queenstown and Milford Sound.

Planning this trip without a car

The Cook Strait ferry is the fixed point of this trip — book it first, especially between December and February.
Ten days across both islands means several long legs. Alternating a driving day with a stay-put day keeps it enjoyable.
Flying home from Queenstown rather than back to Auckland saves a whole day of travel.
