The road is a good sealed highway throughout, but it's long: fatigue is the real hazard, and the desert road section over the plateau occasionally closes for winter weather. Treat it as two days and it becomes one of the great drives.

The smart way: break it in Taupō

Taupō sits almost exactly halfway and is the natural overnight stop — lakeside town, hot pools, and Huka Falls a few minutes away. Auckland to Taupō one day, Taupō to Wellington the next: two comfortable half-day drives with time to actually see things.

Flying between Auckland and Wellington takes about an hour and is the fast option when the journey isn't the point.
