Do New Zealand taxis take card?

Most do, though a card surcharge is common. With a booked private transfer you pay by card, bank transfer or invoice when you book, so there is nothing to settle in the car.

Should I tip a driver in New Zealand?

Tipping is not expected in New Zealand and no one will think less of you for not doing it. Drivers are paid properly for the job. A tip is welcome if you have had a great trip, but it is genuinely optional.

Is Uber available everywhere in New Zealand?

No. Ride-share works reasonably well in the main centres and is patchy to non-existent in smaller towns, at regional airports and late at night. If your trip is outside a main city, or early, or important, book a car in advance.

How much does a long-distance trip cost?

It depends on distance, vehicle and timing, and it is always quoted as a fixed total rather than a meter. Put the two addresses into the booking form and you will have a price in seconds.

Is the price I am quoted the price I pay?

Yes. You are quoted a fixed total before you book, and that is what you pay. There is no meter or per-minute charge for traffic. The total only changes if you change the trip — extra stops, extra passengers or a different vehicle.

Payment is by card. You can pay a 20% or 50% deposit, or pay in full; any balance is collected by card before travel. Corporate accounts can request consolidated billing.

How much is a taxi in New Zealand?

The short answer

There is no single national taxi rate in New Zealand. Operators set their own fares, so the same trip can cost noticeably different amounts depending on who picks you up, what time it is and how long the traffic holds you. A metered fare is only known at the end of the trip. A private transfer is quoted as one fixed total before you book.

Metered fares are built from a flagfall when the trip starts, a rate per kilometre while you are moving and a rate per minute while you are not. That last part is why the same journey costs more in rush hour than at midday, and why a hold-up at roadworks lands on the passenger rather than the operator.

A private transfer is priced the other way around. The distance, the vehicle and the time of travel are worked out in advance and turned into a single number. Traffic then becomes our problem, not yours — useful when you are heading to a flight, a ferry or a meeting.

For long-distance travel the difference matters even more. New Zealand towns are further apart than most visitors expect, and a three or four hour drive on a meter is not something anyone should agree to blind. Those trips are always quoted as a fixed price.
