Private transfer, taxi, ride-share, shuttle or public transport — what's the difference?
If you're weighing up a private transfer against a taxi, a ride-share app, a shared airport shuttle or public transport, here's how the options compare. Highway 1 Tours & Transfers is always a pre-booked private transfer: one vehicle, your group, a fixed price.

For a short city hop with one or two people, a taxi or ride-share is often fine. For families, groups, early flights, intercity trips and long-distance touring, a pre-booked private transfer is usually calmer, more predictable and better value for the vehicle — and it's the same driver and car for a full-day tour or multi-day itinerary.
Napier questions
- Do you run a shared airport shuttle in Napier?
- No. We're a private transfer service, so the vehicle is booked for your group alone. A shared shuttle picks up several unrelated passengers and works through a list of addresses; with us the car goes straight from your door to Hawke's Bay Airport, at the time you chose.
- Is a private transfer worth it compared with a shared shuttle?
- For one person travelling light, a shared shuttle is usually the cheapest way to the terminal. For couples, families, groups, early departures and anyone with real luggage, a private transfer is normally better value once you divide it across the seats — and it saves the extra hour of other people's stops.
- What time will you pick me up?
- The time you ask for. We work backwards from your flight and the traffic on the day, then confirm the pickup with you — there's no fixed shuttle timetable to fit around.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- We track the flight and move the pickup to match the actual landing time, with waiting time included, so a delay doesn't cost you your ride.
- Can you take a big group from Napier?
- Yes. Tell us the number of passengers and bags when you book and we'll allocate the right vehicle, or more than one vehicle for larger groups travelling together.
- Can I book a return trip at the same time?
- Yes, and most people do. Book the outbound and the return together and both drivers are confirmed in advance, which matters most for early-morning departures.
- Is a private transfer better than a taxi or Uber for long-distance trips in New Zealand?
- For intercity and long-haul trips a pre-booked private transfer is usually the calmer option. The price is fixed before you travel, the driver is allocated and briefed in advance, and the vehicle is sized for your group and luggage. Taxis charge by the meter, which climbs with distance and waiting time, and ride-share drivers often decline or cancel very long bookings.
- How is Highway 1 Tours & Transfers different from a shared airport shuttle?
- A shared shuttle carries several passengers and stops at multiple addresses. Highway 1 Tours & Transfers is a private transfer: the vehicle is yours alone, it goes direct to your address, and the pickup time is the one you chose. For a solo traveller a shuttle can be cheaper; for families and groups a private transfer is usually better value and more convenient.
- Why do you prefer bookings to be made in advance?
- Because we do long-distance and intercity work, advance booking lets us allocate the right driver for the route, make sure they are properly rested, and prepare the vehicle for your luggage or any special requests. It also means your price is locked and your driver is confirmed, rather than hoping a car is available at the last minute.
- Can I just use public transport instead of a private transfer?
- Public transport is the cheapest option where it exists, especially between main centres. It works well if you are travelling light, your timing matches the timetable and you don't mind the first and last mile from the station or stop. For door-to-door service, luggage, children, groups or routes with limited public transport, a private transfer is more practical.
- Are your drivers better prepared than an Uber or Bolt driver for long rides?
- Our drivers are selected and briefed specifically for intercity and long-distance private transfers. Because the trip is booked in advance, the driver knows the route, the distance and any special requirements before they leave. Ride-share drivers are independent contractors who accept trips on the day; they may not have experience or appetite for a three- or four-hour drive.
- When is a taxi or ride-share the better choice?
- For a quick trip across town with one or two people and little luggage, a taxi or ride-share is usually faster and cheaper. A private transfer comes into its own for airport runs, families, groups, early or late pickups, intercity travel and any trip where you want the price, vehicle and driver confirmed in advance.
